Letter to women's organisations in the Netherlands (8th June 04) _POSTEDON Wednesday, October 06, 2004 - 12:41 PM

Dear friends:

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Sawsan Salim. I am the coordinator of the International campaign to end honour killing. We based in London - UK.

As you might have heard about the murder of Suham Qairant the Kurdish women in which her death took place on 13th of April this year. I am writing to you on behalf of our campaign and our peer organisation (Organisation of Women Freedom in Iraq (OWFI) - Netherlands branch).

Astera Mohamd representative of OWFI in Netherlands has contacted the police in Amsterdam city, yet we have not received any encouraging response indicates that the police will take the matter seriously.

In this letter I would like to contact you to raise our concern on the killing of this woman, yet the Media, and police turned a blind eye to stop it. The killing of Suham Qairani is an addition to the number of women from the Kurdish community who have been killed by their male family members under the name of honour killing.

Having that we have started already to work from London in cooperation with our peer women's organisation in Amsterdam, We appeal to you to join our campaign to pressurise the decision making bodies, and the police in Netherlands to take an active action to stop this crimes and not to give any sanctuary to the criminals under the name of (their culture).

We are planning to set up raising awareness campaign within the authorities and, Kurdish community in the Netherlands as well as the wider community such as media, the legal authorities and other related agencies to provide full protection measures for women.

I would contact you soon to inform you about the date and the place of our actions in this respect. And if your organisation has taken any action in this regard we will be delighted if you share with us your work.

I am looking forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Sawsan Salim
The coordinator of the International campaign to end Honour Killing
